Be wary of false narratives

Modern philosopher Nassim Taleb has warned of the “narrative fallacy”—the tendency to assemble unrelated events of the past into stories. These stories, however gratifying to create, are inherently misleading. What’s need is a strong sense of objectivity. A difficult task when it comes to ourselves, and perhaps our chosen profession. Yet, that objectivity is key to helping us take the steps toward improving our business, personal life, and even our health.

How to Deal with Criticism

Open-Mtg-2018-Knock

I have yet to meet a person who warmly embraces or seeks out criticism, yet each of us must deal with criticism throughout our lives. How can we effectively deal with criticism and leverage it to our advantage?reverse mortgage news

Some of the strongest individuals I know are those who are able to receive criticism. How can each of us better receive and process criticism we receive professionally or personally? Consider these points.

1. Check your self esteem. When we are beaten down and tired our self esteem suffers leaving us vulnerable to responding in a defensive manner. Be mindful of your present state of mind when receiving criticism. When we are feeling good about ourselves we are better prepared to respond in a productive way.

Be Like Water

Be like water. This was the advice given by the late martial arts master Bruce Lee. Strange? Think again. Water flows around obstacles and rocks, finds its way through the smallest opportune cracks and eventually wears down the hardest substances. Bruce Lee explained his philosophy in that water conforms and becomes like the object around it or that contains it such as water adapts to the shape of the glass it is poured into.

reverse mortgage newsThe rapid pace of change in the reverse mortgage industry has left many professionals feeling like they are engaged in martial arts combat. What we can borrow from Bruce’s philosophy is the need for adaptation, improvisation and flexibility. Here’s one business example. Blockbuster video refused to move toward online video rentals and suffered the consequences with store closures and bankruptcy as Netflix gained traction.  Let’s look at some practical ways we can incorporate this philosophy into our daily business practices.

1. Embrace your present state. Look closely at successful businesspeople both in and outside our industry and you’ll find this one trait: they don’t…

7 Steps to Finding & Keeping Happiness

reverse mortgage newsHappiness. It can be elusive at times especially during times of upheaval and industry change. Being a person who can tend to overthink the why, happiness can become the casualty of our internal thought life. Our internal thought life is key as I was reminded this week reading the short booklet I keep on my desk entitled “As a Man Thinketh”. One passage that particularly jumped out was “Circumstances does not make the man; it reveals him to himself”.

Here are a few nuggets of wisdom I found from my recent reading that I want to share with you.

1- Negative thoughts are just thoughts. Don’t believe everything you hear, even that voice in your head. The next time a negative thought enters your mind stop, capture and challenge it. Is it real? Is it likely to happen? Also don’t judge yourself harshly for negative thought but rather hold yourself accountable for what you do with them.

2- Create boundaries. Technology is great but it can also become an electronic dog leash…

Harsh Truths for Increased Success

Reverse Mortgage News

One of cinema’s most memorable quotes came from the film “A Few Good Men” in which Jack Nicholson’s character retorts “You can’t handle the truth!” In an age where many in society see truth as relative and subjective there are a few truths about life we should embrace for greater happiness and productivity.

1- Life isn’t fair. It seems obvious but our minds often subconsciously trick us asking ‘why is this happening to me?!

2- First steps are always the hardest. Whether it’s a diet, a new marketing plan or parenting making a substantial change requires that first leap of faith…actually just a small step.

3- Good things don’t happen overnight. Think back on any great accomplishment you’ve made. Did it happen instantaneously? No. Great rewards require great commitment and accomplishment and good old hard work.

4- Everyone is not on board. Just because you have a great idea…
