Community involvement has its benefits. Chief among them are the lasting friendships built. And second, are the strategic contacts you make along the way.

While I have not originated reverse mortgages in many years, I do find myself participating in community issues and events from time to time. Whether it’s a political campaign to improve public safety, and occasional chamber of commerce event, or a meal with local elected officials, each has taught me the value of relationships as the road to success.

The adage, it’s not what you know but who you know cannot be overstated. As talented and motivated as you may be your growth and success are limited without being connected to others. The more people you know, the more you are liked and trusted.

Givers get. We don’t give just to get something in return but those who give of their time, energy, or money end up better off. It’s the law of reciprocity at work.

So the next time you have an opportunity to work with local business leaders take it! Put on those work gloves and help with a community clean-up. Volunteer for your local community charity events. Get to know your local media members and elected officials. After all, they’re just people. People who will make your life personally richer and who may be able to make valuable introductions to strategic partnerships.

Make yourself an asset to your community. See and be seen. Make a few friends and prosper along the way. In the end, relationships are the most effective marketing you can ever invest in.
