Thoughts & circumstances…

For the last ten years a small, well-worn booklet. “As a man Thinketh” has taken residence on my desk. A classic considered one of the seminal works of the self-help movement. Originally published in 1903 by British philosophical writer James Allen, this modest treatise focuses on the power of our thoughts to shape our present circumstance, just as a gardener carefully cultivates and shapes his crop. Beyond forces outside of our control, much of our success relies upon our mental state of mind. Yesterday on HECMWorld.com Norcom’s John Luddy aptly put it this way. “If you’re not happy it’s hard to sell. It’s going to be hard to make your clients happy if you’re not happy.”

With that in mind here are some nuggets of wisdom each of us should ponder, take to heart, and perhaps even better, act upon. Please note that at the time this piece was written the word man was used as a generic reference to humankind…

  1. This is and how I continue to live my life every, single day as a practicing Buddhist of 33 years.

It’s important to be aware of your thoughts and actions, because they will show up in your environment.

It’s important to remember to not complain, blame or hold grudges against others and if you’re not getting the results you want in life, take a look at your own behavior.

Gratitude and appreciation are important to success, taking responsibility for everything that happens to you….

“Simply set your heart on doing what must be done today”.

  2. Good point Shannon! I read John Luddy’s presentation yesterday on your Reverse Focus, I thought it was great, I put a comment on your post, it went like this:

“Now that is what I call a great suggestion made by John Luddy!

I don’t know about you but I am a baby boomer senior and I love the music of the 60′s and even the 50′s. When I play those songs, and I do often, it does make me happy. It also gives me the burst of energy I need to go out there and counsel the public on the best product available to our senior homeowners!

Thanks John, great start for the day message from you!

    John A. Smaldone”

Obviously John Luddy’s remarks pertained to when he is down or has the lack of energy to get roiling, he would play a lively song to get him motivated. I do the same thing, this is why I wanted to share it again as a have a great weekend all!

    John

  3. The most interesting thing about the information John Luddy shared was the general condition of his peers at the NRMLA Conference. These conferences used to energize attendees. Now we read about sessions that seem to be little more than griping and grinding of teeth.

Perhaps Peter should have had a surprise general session of nothing but jazz from those he represents in that industry. Perhaps that might lighten the mood and make for a more conducive environment.

When facts are what are bogging us down as an industry, then we have not grown much from our childhood. Some are bothered by the very mention of stagnation. If Grant, Sherman, Marshall, Ike, and Patton had been bothered and overcome by mild facts like that, just the general hardship of war would have ended rapidly in full surrender for the Presidents they served.

Some need to get out of the battle for serious health reasons unrelated to physical wounds and so they should. Yet if all soldiers did this….

    Hang in there.
